Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, and Vicarious Trauma
Anxiety and Depression
Pregnancy and Postpartum
I believe clients know themselves better than anyone else. Because of this, I focus on helping clients gain the strength they need to deal with current stressors. My role as a counsellor is to create a safe space that allows you to work through any struggles you are currently facing while feeling heard and understood. I will support you in setting therapeutic goals and collectively exploring ways to achieve them. My approach is based on an integration of strength-based, solution focused, collaborative, and client-centered approaches.
Burnout and Self-Care
Passengers in airplanes are always instructed to place oxygen masks on themselves before assisting children or others in the event of an emergency. Often people try to help those around them before helping themselves. This analogy is fitting for self-care and burnout because many people neglect their personal needs in order to help others. This can be true in both professional and personal settings. Signs of burnout can include anxiety, irritability, fatigue, negative emotions, interpersonal issues, and health problems.
Research shows that self-care is a significant protective factor against burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma. Counselling is one form of self-care that can help with personal growth and lead to both personal and professional benefits.
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor through the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. I have a significant amount of experience working with groups and individuals who struggle with addiction, anxiety & depression, as well as providing crisis intervention. As a professional, I have not only witnessed the impact of burnout on others but have also experienced it first hand. As a result of time spent working towards achieving balance and gaining a stronger grasp on self-care, I became increasingly interested in learning how I could help others. This awareness led me to complete my master’s at City University of Seattle where I focused my research on finding tools and interventions for self-care. These collective experiences have allowed me to recognize the stressors associated with demanding obligations, meeting societal expectations and fulfilling multiple roles.
I also have a passion for helping women navigate through pregnancy and postpartum, which stems from my own journey as a mother. As I have stepped into the role of a parent, I have gained a greater understanding of the challenges and unknowns related to pregnancy and early parenthood.
Finding a Balance
I understand the challenges of trying to find balance in life. Individuals who carry a heavy load of responsibility often feel that they should have a never-ending capacity to fulfill these demands. The truth is we are all human and we all have our limits. If we do not take the time to check in with ourselves, we may not even be aware how close to burning out we may be. It is possible to achieve a balance that works for you.
There is no specific solution that works for everyone. Each person has an individual journey and I would be honoured to have the opportunity to walk alongside you in yours.
Please use the contact information and the form below in order to get in touch with me. I offer a 10-15 minute free phone consultation to those seeking services in order to determine if I am the best fit for you.
