Get to Know us Better!
At Vitality Collective it is important to us that we provide quality therapists to help you reach your goals for counselling. This means that everyone that is highlighted in this newsletter and on our website has obtained their certification as a Registered Clinical Counsellor, Canadian Certified Counsellor, or Registered Social Worker after getting their Masters degree in their education.
As we use this space to highlight therapists each month, it is our hope that you will get to know us a bit better. The relationship between you and your counsellor is the key ingredient in helping you reach your goals!
This month’s counsellor is Lisa Catallo, RCC, CCC
What area of mental health do you specialize in?
I serve women and couples who have survived a traumatic or abusive experience.
The way that I explain trauma is that it is an event that was unexpected or you weren’t planning for, and it changes the way that you operate in or view your life. This can be anything from “small-t trauma” such as being a child and experiencing your first thunder and lightning storm, to “big t-trauma” such as experiencing war or sexual abuse. Your emotions become overwhelming, and life is changed.
For couples, you may be dating and trying to decide if you want to move forward, or maybe you’re engaged and want to work on a couple of things to give yourself the best chance in marriage. You may have been together for a long time and just can’t get over that one recurring argument, or maybe you are faced with the decision of whether to continue in your marriage or not. I can support you at any step along the way.
What age group do you work with?
I work with adults, from the ages of 25-55
What days are you available?
I am available Monday through Thursday and offer evening appointments on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
How can you help me?
I typically start with helping you find ways to cope with what is being thrown at you right now. So this can look like finding coping mechanisms to help you manage your anxiety or depression. Once we both feel that you are able to handle what comes up in the now, then I am curious about why you’re facing that particular issue. This doesn’t mean that we have to sit in the past (unless that is important), but I believe that your past informs your present, and that it is easier to understand it and perhaps heal from it in order to help you move forward in life.
I also offer a type of therapy (EMDR) that has been proven to help people find release from their anxiety and traumatic experiences. It’s been so cool to see how this way of doing therapy can make such an improvement in peoples lives in areas where they formerly were stuck. You can read more about EMDR here.
What is one fun fact about you?
This weekend I have been away celebrating the wedding of one of my daughters. Since she has brought this man into our family, that means that I consider myself the parent of 8 “children”. My kids consist of a son, 3 daughters, 1 step-daughter, a daughter-in-law, and two sons-in-law. Say that 3 times really fast. I love being with my kids as much as possible, but the best time is Christmas Eve because they all sleep in our little townhouse, and then Christmas morning we wake up and do our gifts and breakfast together. We’re not without our own family dynamics, but I love all of my kids and the ones they’ve added to our family.
