What happens in couples counselling?

Couples counselling is designed to help you and your partner reconnect, navigate challenges, and strengthen your relationship. At Vitality Collective, our marriage and couples counsellors bring expertise from specialized training in evidence-based approaches, including the Gottman Institute, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), and Relational Life Therapy (RLT).

These proven methods provide you with practical tools to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and deepen your emotional connection. Whether you're facing significant challenges or simply want to enhance your bond, we’re here to guide you toward building a healthier, more fulfilling relationship.

Whether you're facing communication struggles, feeling emotionally distant, dealing with a big life change, or just hitting a rough patch, our team of therapists in Chilliwack, Vancouver, Surrey, and online, is here to support both of you. We create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can talk openly and calmly about what’s going on in your relationship. In therapy, we help you understand the patterns and habits that may be getting in the way of a deeper connection, like how you communicate or the unspoken needs you might have. Together, we’ll work on tools to communicate better, resolve disagreements, and rebuild the trust and intimacy that might have been lost.

Couples counselling isn’t just for when things feel broken—it’s for anyone who wants to strengthen their bond, improve how they relate to each other, or get support through life’s transitions. Whether you're working through a specific issue or just want to feel closer, we’re here to guide you through it with care and understanding. How does couples counselling help?

Couples counselling can be incredibly helpful for couples who want to improve their relationship, work through challenges, or simply feel more connected to each other. It offers a chance to pause and gain clarity on what’s happening in your relationship, without the pressure of everyday life getting in the way. Here’s how couples counselling in Vancouver, Surrey, Chilliwack, and online can help:

Improve Communication With Each Other
Miscommunication and feeling unheard are common struggles in relationships. Couples counselling equips you with tools to communicate effectively, even during tough conversations, while fostering mutual understanding. You’ll also learn how to listen actively and express your needs in a way that strengthens your bond.

Create Mutual Parenting Strategies
Parenting can be one of the most rewarding and challenging aspects of a relationship. Counselling helps you align on parenting goals, develop consistent strategies, and navigate the complexities of raising children together.

Find Healing From Affairs
Trust is the cornerstone of a healthy relationship, and rebuilding it after a betrayal is challenging but possible. Counselling provides a safe space to explore what led to the breach, address the hurt, and develop a path toward healing and rebuilding trust.

Build a Stable, Healthy Relationship
Relationships require ongoing care and effort. Couples counselling supports you in identifying the foundations of a stable, fulfilling partnership and equips you with strategies to maintain and grow it over time.

Navigate Family Stressors
Extended family dynamics, starting a family, or cultural differences can create stress in a relationship. Counselling helps you address these issues together, fostering a united approach to handling external pressures.

Solve Problems in a Constructive Way
Couples counselling encourages teamwork and problem-solving that prioritizes mutual respect and collaboration. Instead of letting disagreements escalate, you’ll learn how to work together to find constructive solutions.

Resolve and Manage Conflict
In addition to resolving current conflicts, counselling equips you with long-term skills to manage future disagreements in a way that strengthens rather than undermines your relationship.

Improved Intimacy
Emotional distance can develop over time, but couples counselling helps you reconnect on a deeper level. By better understanding each other’s needs and learning how to nurture emotional and physical intimacy, you can rediscover the closeness you share.

When should we seek couples counselling?

Deciding when to seek couples counselling doesn’t always mean something is “wrong” in your relationship. In fact, you might just want to strengthen your connection, deepen your bond, or build a stronger foundation for the future. That said, there are some signs that couples counselling could be helpful. If you find communication is getting harder, if small arguments are turning into big ones, or if you’re feeling emotionally distant from each other, therapy can provide a space to work through those challenges. Couples counselling is also great if trust has been shaken, or if you’re going through a major life change in your life or navigating a loss. Even if everything feels generally okay but you’re looking for a fresh perspective or tools to improve your relationship, couples counselling can help. It’s about getting support to keep things strong, healthy, and growing—whether you’re in crisis or just want to create a deeper, more fulfilling connection.

Is couples counselling confidential?

Yes, couples counselling is confidential. Everything you and your partner discuss with your Vancouver, Chilliwack, or Surrey therapist stays between you, your partner, and your therapist, creating a safe and trusting environment to explore your relationship. Your therapist at Vitality Collective is bound by ethical and legal guidelines to protect your privacy. This means they cannot share anything you discuss without your permission, except in rare situations where there’s a risk of harm to you or others. If you and your partner choose to see your therapist individually at times, your therapist will keep those sessions separate and confidential as well. It’s important to feel safe and open in couples counselling, and confidentiality is key to that.

Will couples counselling save our relationship?

Couples counselling can be a powerful tool for improving and strengthening your relationship, but whether it "saves" your relationship depends on both partners' commitment to the process. Therapy provides a supportive space to work through challenges, improve communication, rebuild trust, and deepen your emotional connection. However, it requires openness, effort, and a willingness to make changes from both partners. Couples counselling can help you gain clarity, understand each other better, and develop healthier ways to relate to each other, but it’s ultimately up to you both to take what you learn and apply it to your relationship. Even if couples counselling doesn’t result in staying together, it can still help you both gain valuable insights, whether you're working toward healing together or making the decision to part ways in a healthy, constructive way.

What should we do to prepare for couples counselling?

Preparing for couples counselling can help make your experience more productive and meaningful. First, it's helpful to come with an open mind and a willingness to be vulnerable. Be ready to listen to each other, even when the conversations are tough. It’s also important to be honest about your concerns, feelings, and expectations for therapy. You might want to reflect on the issues you’d like to address, but also think about the strengths in your relationship and what you both want to work toward. If possible, have a conversation with your partner about what you hope to achieve from counselling and what your goals are. Finally, keep in mind that the process will take time, and it’s okay to take things one step at a time. Therapy is a space to learn and grow together, so preparing with patience, honesty, and openness will set you both up for success.
