Therapists, Counsellors and Psychologists in Vancouver, BC

Looking for a skilled therapist in Vancouver, BC? Our team of experienced counsellors offers inclusive and professional therapy for individuals of all ages—adults, young adults, children, teens, couples, and families—across Vancouver and the surrounding areas.

Are you searching for a psychologist, counsellor, or therapist in Vancouver, BC?

Whether you’re new to the area or are simply looking for added support for your mental health, finding the best therapist for you can come with a lot of questions. You may be wondering what the difference is between a psychologist and a counsellor, how to tell if therapy is right for you, or if you should opt for in-person or virtual therapy sessions. Plus, with cost as a common barrier, you might wonder if your insurance in BC covers counselling services.

At Vitality Collective, we believe everyone deserves access to therapy. Our collective of compassionate therapists are committed to supporting individuals in Vancouver and nearby communities—such as Mount Pleasant, Kitsilano, East Vancouver, Downtown, the West End, and Vancouver City Centre—with the resources they need to make positive changes in their lives. The first step is understanding your counselling options in Vancouver, BC.

What’s the difference between a psychologist and a registered clinical counsellor in Vancouver, BC?

Psychologists and Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) both provide valuable mental health support to BC residents, but their roles differ significantly, and understanding these differences can help you make the best choice for your needs—or your child’s. The greatest differences between psychologists and counsellors are their schooling and what they are qualified to do. Psychologists have advanced training at the doctoral level, allowing them to provide assessments and diagnoses. RCCs have a minimum of a master’s degree. Psychologists can provide a diagnosis and conduct psycho-educational assessments for issues like learning difficulties. While RCCs cannot diagnose, they are often the first choice by clients to provide mental health support as they excel and are trained in providing accessible, client-centered counselling for a wide range of issues. Counsellors also invest in receiving extensive post-graduate training in various evidence-based modalities as psychologists. For example, CBT, EMDR, AEDP, IFS, and other established therapies can be delivered by a counsellor trained in those methods.

Should I see a Vancouver counsellor or a Vancouver psychologist?

If you’re looking for ongoing support, an RCC can be a more affordable option for therapy. Many individuals and families find that RCCs offer the same level of care as psychologists, but at a lower cost, making them a great choice for long-term therapy. Some individuals choose to start with a psychologist for an assessment and then continue with an RCC for regular sessions. Both psychologists and RCCs can specialize in different areas—like trauma therapy, child therapy, or family counselling—so it’s really important to choose someone whose expertise fits your specific needs. And remember, if you find that your therapist isn’t the right fit, it’s perfectly okay to make a change.

It’s also important to note that the terms “counsellor” or “therapist” can be used by those who may not have the education, credentials, and experience to support your mental health needs. When looking for a counsellor in Vancouver, BC, be sure to check that they’re registered with a professional body, like the BC Psychological Association (psychologists), BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (RCCs), BC College of Social Workers or Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. This ensures that they have the proper qualifications to support you.

At Vitality Collective, our Vancouver team includes Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs), Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCCs), and Registered Social Workers (RSWs). If you're not sure which therapist is the best fit for you, simply fill out our new client inquiry form, and we’ll help you get connected with someone who can help. If you’re already a client, you can book your next session directly below.

Booking Therapy in Vancouver, BC

What happens during your first therapy session in Vancouver?

Walking into your first therapy session can feel a bit intimidating, but take a deep breath—you’ve already made an important step toward improving your well-being, and that’s something to be proud of. It takes courage to ask for help, and we’re here to support you through every part of the journey.

The great thing is that there’s no “right” way to approach your first session. All you need to do is show up and be open to the process. Your Vancouver therapist will meet you exactly where you’re at and guide you through the session with care, understanding, and compassion.

In your first session, your Vancouver therapist will introduce themselves and explain their approach to therapy. They’ll walk you through key details, like confidentiality, and explain the potential benefits and risks of therapy. Then, they’ll ask you some questions to get to know you better—things like your background, what brought you to therapy, and what you’re hoping to achieve. This might include exploring past therapy experiences, significant life events, and your goals for counselling in Vancouver. Remember, this is just the beginning of your healing process. Your therapist is here to listen, understand, and support you as you work toward a healthier, more fulfilling life.

The way your session feels can vary from person to person—some might feel emotional or vulnerable, while others may find the conversation more laid-back. What’s most important is that you feel heard, supported, and safe. It’s completely normal to wonder if therapy is the right fit for you—whatever you’re experiencing is valid, and therapy can be a helpful tool to better understand and work through it.

If, after your first session, you feel like your Vancouver therapist isn’t the best match for you, that’s perfectly okay. You can talk openly with them about your feelings, and they’ll help you find someone who might be a better fit. Remember, therapy is your space to explore, heal, and grow at a pace that feels right for you—and your therapist is here to support you.

Is therapy covered by BC insurance?

Many insurance plans cover therapy at Vitality Collective, and we’re happy to offer direct billing with a variety of providers to make accessing therapy in Vancouver easier for you. We now offer direct billing with insurers like Greenshield, ICBC, WorkBC, Medavie Blue Cross, and more. If your insurer is on our list, we’ll bill them directly, so you don’t have to pay upfront and wait for reimbursement.

If your plan doesn't allow direct billing for a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), you can still submit the invoice for reimbursement. Most insurance companies will reimburse you promptly after you submit the receipt. If your insurance doesn’t cover RCCs, some employers may allow you to request that your plan covers these services, so it’s worth checking with your HR department. Alternatively, if you're self-employed, you can set up a Private Health Services Plan (PHSP) to cover therapy costs.

For ICBC and CVAP clients, please note that these claims only cover part of the session fee, and a small co-pay is required for the balance. We also offer sliding scale fees for those facing financial hardship, depending on availability. If you’re unsure about your coverage or have questions about direct billing, please do not hesitate to contact our team—we’re happy to help you navigate the process.

Can I book a virtual therapy session in Vancouver?

Virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy and can remove many barriers that prevent individuals, couples, or families from accessing the support they need. Along with Vitality Collective’s physical locations in Vancouver, Chilliwack, and Surrey, we offer virtual support for clients, no matter where they are.

We understand that finding time for therapy can be barriers to seeking help. Virtual therapy allows you to access support from the comfort of your home or any location that works for you—ideal for anyone with mobility challenges, those who live in more remote areas, or anyone with a busy schedule. With secure and encrypted telehealth technology, your privacy is always protected, and you can feel confident that your sessions are confidential. Many clients find that attending sessions from home makes the experience more comfortable and less intimidating, especially for first-time therapy-goers. Plus, the flexibility of online counselling allows you to book sessions that fit your schedule, eliminating the need for commuting and making it easier to prioritize your mental health. Virtual counselling is also covered by a wide range of extended health benefits.

Getting started is simple. Fill out our new client inquiry form, schedule your appointment, and begin your online counselling journey from the comfort of your home in Vancouver—or wherever you choose to log in.
